Job Description

University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation is searching for Service Crew and Fleet Technicians. Our technicians work within University Transit Service to provide auxiliary support to our transportation services to the University of Virginia community.

Responsibilities

  • Servicing all transit buses and department support vehicles both gasoline-powered and electric daily
  • Preparation and recording of logs regarding cleaning, charging, fueling, and additional fluid servicing weekly
  • Maintaining parking organization of transit buses and support vehicles in Parking & Transportation lot
  • Performs frontline treatment of Parking & Transportation lot during emergency weather events (snow removal, de-icing, etc.)
  • Coordinating with Maintenance Shop Manager and Operations Supervisor to keep inventory and order necessary supplies including vehicle fluids, cleaning supplies, spill response absorbent, and uniforms.
  • Provide both interior and exterior cleaning of all Parking & Transportation vehicles including but not limited to: washing, vacuuming, steaming, disinfectant spraying, and waxing.
  • Operation of a transit bus unit on a fixed route as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events as necessary.
  • Operation of passenger-carrying vans on a demand-response overnight operation as necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 8 months of prior work experience. Experience gained during part-time work as a student may be considered.
  • Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A or B with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements or a valid State of Virginia Driver's License and the ability to obtain the CDL with endorsements within the first 45 days of hire. Must have a positive point balance via a good driving record on existing license.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment DOT Physical including bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching & Drug Screen and obtain at least a 1 year DOT Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ability to follow and enforce specific instructions and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and over two-way radio is essential. Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak in the English language.
  • General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web-based systems for payroll and performance management is essential.
  • The ability to drive any/all buses or support vehicles.
  • The ability to work overtime and shifts over eight (8) hours, to meet services hours in Transit Operations.

Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all buses and support vehicles in the fleet.This position is considered essential and is subject to emergency and stand-by call.This position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Note: University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day/7 days a week.This requires that all employees have flexibility with scheduling.

Work performed as part of servicing the equipment requires high amounts of standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.

Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right) and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet.

Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying. All these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position.

The anticipated starting salary is $20.93 hour with no CDLand $22.50 with CDL . This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits.
